A dedicated team of Esokia developers on a mission in Paris

Tiana, Caleb and Mariot are three Esokia developers who are part of the team dedicated to the project of the multinational Hager Group. Here is their testimony of their experience on the project and their stay in Paris within Hager's digital factory.

HOW DID YOU BECOME A WEB DEVELOPER?

Tiana: My parents saw me as a future lawyer. However, I had been playing with computers since I was a child. Until a friend who worked as a freelancer taught me how to code. And I kept on learning.

Caleb: I started development in second grade. But in college I focused more on physics. Then my dad encouraged me to pursue my passion, web development. And here I am, doing what I love!

Mariot: I myself studied computer science at university (ITU). Then I had a first project with BICI, organizing their information system CNAPS. After that, my first experience with Sitecore was with the company Proximity.

WHAT DOES THIS PROJECT WITH THE HAGER GROUP CONSIST OF?

Tiana: The project consists in helping Hager's digital team in the digital transformation of the group. We act as their expert consultants and technical developers on Magento and Sitecore CMS.

Caleb: We had to dust off and classify the product data that the group had kept for years. Then we had to organize them on the site in the form of an e-commerce catalogue.

WHAT'S YOUR ROLE ON THE TEAM?

Caleb:  Tiana and I were responsible for sorting the group's ERP data and then classifying it into different channels and catalogues using the PIM AKANEO (Product Information Management) software.

Tiana: And when the catalogs are ready, they're transferred to Magento..

Mariot: I'm stepping in at the final stage. I'm handling the Sitecore front end. I integrate Magento into Sitecore. And also I'm in charge of data indexing for the product search bar.

WHAT ARE THE STRONG POINTS OF THESE CMS?

Tiana: Magento is a super flexible e-commerce solution! I think that as a developer, the major asset is that the platform is organized with isolated code by features and blocks.

Caleb: Still on Magento, I like the fact that I can draw from my little JavaScript "toolbox" when I need it, it's very handy!

Mariot: As for me, on Sitecore the structure of the contents as blocks is clever because then the blocks can be used on other data. Not to mention the multilingual aspect of the software, which is an undeniable asset for international companies.

AS DEVELOPERS, WHAT WERE YOUR CHALLENGES?

Tiana: For Caleb and I, the biggest challenge was learning the complexities of Magento 2. And it was pretty exciting, actually! We started from scratch, and today we became Magento 2 experts. We are asked questions and take into account our expertise and solutions. It's pretty rewarding.

Mariot: I loved Sitecore's learning curve! It's a platform that you have to manipulate on a daily basis to understand it.

AN ANECDOTE TO SHARE WITH US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AT THE DIGITAL HAGER FACTORY IN PARIS?

Tiana: Personally, even if I come from Madagascar, it's the first time that I was facing a heat wave of 42 degrees when I was in PARIS at the Digitale Factory D'HAGER. Otherwise, I really appreciated the opportunity to share our knowledge.

Mariot: Yes, the relational and sharing was a good experience. Moreover, I was surprised by the work structure around the projects.

Caleb: I haven't had a chance to go yet. But I hope to be able to explore a bit of Paris and talk with foreign developers.

A LITTLE ADVICE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BE DEVELOPERS?

Tiana: Practice! Practice! Practice! It's the only real thing. And also, keeping up with technology.

Caleb: Go for it! If that's your passion, then go for it! Work on your skills alongside what you do.

Mariot: Start even without a diploma! And most importantly, improve your visibility to stand out from the rest.  For example by hosting your own portfolio.

If you too are passionate about web development and want to experience a mission abroad then try your luck by joining our team! A career opportunity to be seized.
